🕵️‍♂️ Something to Keep an Eye On

Recent research identifies an association between substance use and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI)

Recent research has found a bidirectional association between the use of cannabis, cocaine, and other street drugs to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among college students. A “bidirectional” association in this context means that both subjects could be the cause or the effect. So, in other words, this research is indicating that among college students, those using cannabis, cocaine, or other street drugs are at an increased risk to engage in non-suicidal self-injury and those who engage in acts of non-suicidal self-injury are also more susceptible to engage in cannabis, cocaine, or other street drug usage.

The Takeaway: It is important, now more than ever, that we have open conversations with youth and young adults about the harmful effects substance use could have on the way we think, feel, and act. As friends, family members, and colleagues please be intentional about advocating for the benefits of finding help. 988 is the mental health crisis hotline and always a resource to anyone in the United States!
